The Morton Grove Farmers’ Market is happy to announce that its new partnership with the Morton Grove Park District has officially been approved by the Park District Board at last Thursday night’s board meeting.

Effective May 12, 2012, the MG Park District will host the MG Farmers  Market at the newly acquired site at 6210 Dempster Street, between Harrer Pool and the American Legion Civic Center.  The MG Farmers’ Market continues to be a part of the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The Morton Grove Park District will host the MG Farmers' Market starting in May 2012

The first MG Farmers’ Market event at the 6210 Dempster site will be an outdoor Spring Market on Saturday, May 12 (Mother’s Day Weekend) from 8 am until 12 pm.  The new Farmers’ Market location features ample parking along with easy access by foot or bicycle.  MB Bank has generously offered Market patrons use of their South parking lot.  For your safety, please cross Dempster at the traffic light at Fernald.  The friendly and dedicated EMA volunteers will be on hand to ensure everyone’s safety.

The regular market season will take place every Saturday morning between June 2 – October 13  between 8 am – 12 pm.  We have several festivals planned during the spring, summer and fall.

The market managers are now accepting applications from local vendors for the 2012 Spring Market and the 2012 Season. The Morton Grove Farmers’ Market strives to be a local, producer only Market.   All items must be homegrown, handmade, and/or vendor-created from locally-owned operations. The Morton Grove Farmers’ Market is very fortunate to have the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute in Morton Grove.  The founder and president of the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, Dr. Wayne Goldstein, was instrumental in securing our first Farmers’ Market location.

During our first two seasons, the IBJI property at 8930 Waukegan Road was home to the first Farmers’ Market in Morton Grove.  The Illinois Bone and Joint Institute and Dr. Wayne Goldstein were very generous host.  Property Managers John Kosich and Jay Shin of CTK Properties have been a pleasure to work with these past few years.

While we are excited about our 2012 move to 6210 Dempster St. and our new host, the Morton Grove Park District, we will always have a place in our hearts for the people and the companies who took a chance on a group of volunteers with a shared dream for Morton Grove.

On December 5, 2011, the Morton Grove Farmers’ Market manager team presented the IBJI with a gift basket filled with a variety of locally grown, locally produced items from the recent Winter Market.  Valerie Johnson accepted the basket on behalf of Dr. Goldstein.  She is pictured below with Market Manager Kristina Otte.

The Morton Grove Farmers’ Market will host its first-ever Winter Market this Saturday, Dec. 3 from 10 am to 2 pm, indoors at the American Legion Memorial Civic Center (6140 Dempster St.) in Morton Grove.

Many of the regular market vendors and an assortment of new vendors will be on hand with foods, drinks, gifts and hand-made products. Available that day will be holiday-oriented items, gift baskets, wreaths and boughs, candles, baked goods, meats and free-range eggs, salsas, organic flour, cheeses, nut butters, fudge, granola, hand-made crafts, body-care products, jewelry, greeting cards, ornaments and much more.

Lunch items will also be available, including samosas and naan from Tava Indian Restaurant and sandwiches from Subway Morton Grove.  Free admission, free parking and free children’s crafts will all be part of the Winter Market. Two musical groups will be performing, Luz Eco and Honky Tonk Parade, both popular acts from the regular season market.

The Farmers’ Market is also excited to announce its new location starting in Spring 2012 right next door to the Civic Center at 6210 Dempster St. The Morton Grove Park District has offered to host the Market at its recently purchased property at the old MB Bank drive-thru parking lot.

Market Manager Laura Frisch is pleased at this change, saying “While we are so grateful to the previous hosts at Illinois Bone and Joint Institute for providing us with a place to get our market started, this new location is more amenable to a Farmers’ Market, with parks, Harrer Pool, the Historical Museum and the Civic Center all surrounding the Market.”

She went on to say that neighbors will be able to walk or bike safely to the Market and parking is plentiful both around the parking lot as well as across the street at the back lot of MB Bank. The Morton Grove Farmers’ Market managers are pleased to announce that the Morton Grove Farmers’ Market will be moving to its new location at 6210 Dempster Street at the start of the 2012 season.  After scrutinizing several potential sites around Morton Grove, we selected this location due to its high visibility, popular central location, ample parking and its safe intersection for pedestrians and cyclists.  At Thursday’s Morton Grove Park District board meeting, the Board voted enthusiastically to host the Market on its Dempster Street property near Harrer Pool and the Historical Museum.  We are excited to begin this new partnership with the Morton Grove Park District.  We would also like to thank Village Administrator Joe Wade, the Village of Morton Grove Trustees and our umbrella organization, the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce, for helping us with our site analysis and our decision-making process.

Maier’s Bakery is the featured vendor this week.

The Hillions String Band performs at the MG Farmers' Market once again.

Local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire USA troops, and Cub Scouts will join us at the Market for scout sing-a-longs and to share their scouting traditions and skills.

All scouts (retired and current) will be invited to “make their mark” on the Scouting banner at the Welcome Booth.  Scouts in uniform who bring a food pantry donation will receive a special treat at the Welcome Booth. Everyone is welcome to join us at 10:00 am for a flag ceremony and a moment of silence to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of 9/11.

There will be two 9/11 flag giveaways.  Look for the flags on display at the Welcome Booth and the Music Tent.  Enter to win at the Welcome Booth.

Urban Worm Girl will return with their ever popular red wiggler worms.  Learn all about vermiculture and how to start your own worm compost bin to recycle your kitchen waste.  (Update 9/9:  Urban Worm Girl was forced to cancel due to a death in the family.  Our sympathies go out to Stephanie and Amber.  We look forward to working with you next season.)

Lifeway Foods will be sampling and selling their kefirs and other delicious probiotic products.

Thank you to all who have been asking about Annie’s Gourmet Olive Oils.  They will be back this Saturday!

Albo Acres Alpaca will not be at the 9/10 Market, but are expected to return on September 17th and all 3 Markets in October.
